Fido stands on his hind quarters at your dining table imploring you to give him a taste of what you eat. It melts your heart and you without a thought toss him a piece of the roast meat or a bone from your table.
You may love to share, but sadly not all foods you eat can be tossed to your four legged friend. So can I give …. to my dog? If you’re a pet owner to a dog, here is a list of foods that could be potentially dangerous to your pet.
1. Chocolate and caffeine
Chocolate contains high proportion of methylxanthines (theobromine), a compound that does not suit the body system of dogs. The proportion of Methylxanthines is more in dark chocolate than white chocolate. Chocolate consumption causes trembling vomiting, diarrhea and excessive thirst in dogs. It could also be lethal.
2. Grapes and Raisins
They are not recommended for dogs because they cause severe damage to the kidneys. The other adverse effects observed after consumption of grapes and raisins include vomiting, diarrhea, intense thirst and sluggishness. The reason why grapes and raisins do not agree with dogs is still to be discovered.
3. Onions and Garlic
Consumption of garlic and onion causes Hemolytic Anemia in canines. This is a health condition in dogs wherein the red blood cells burst. Thiosulphate, a compound present in both onions and garlic is responsible for hemolytic anemia is dogs.
4. Milk and Diary Products
Dogs cannot digest milk and diary products because their body does not contain the enzyme lactase needed to breakdown lactose in milk.
5. Uncooked Meat and Fish
Raw meat and fish are carriers of Salmonella and E-Coli bacteria. Both cause food poisoning in dog.
6. Macadamia nuts and walnuts
Macadamia nuts when ingested in excess quantities causes muscle weakness and pain, vomiting, depression, diarrhea, trembling and lethargy in dogs.
7. Raw eggs
Eggs contain an enzyme Avidin. This enzyme interferes with the body’s capacity to absorb vitamins from the food your pet ingests especially Vitamin B. Additionally; eggs contain Salmonella and E-coli bacteria.
Nutmeg impacts the central nervous system and causes seizures and muscle spasms in dogs. It could also be fatal to Fido.
Dogs cannot tolerate salt in excess quantities. It may result in frequent urination, intense thirst, fever, diarrhea, vomiting and at times even death. Excess intake of salt could also result in sodium ion poisoning.
10. Unbaked Yeast dough
Dough that has yeast added rises because of the continuously multiplying yeast cells. When this dough is ingested by your pet, it continues to rise even in his stomach. The continuously rising yeast dough could block or result in a rupture of the gastrointestinal tract. This is a very dangerous condition.
The fungicidal toxin Persin present in Avocados is harmful for dogs. When taken in excess amounts it induces vomiting, breathing difficulties, pancreatic and heart problems.
12. Candy and Gum
The candy and gum you love is the most dangerous in the list of foods your dog should not eat. Candy and gum are made with Xylitol, an artificial sweetener. It stimulates the pancreas and increases the production of insulin in the dog’s body. The increased amount of insulin in the bloodstream causes hypoglycemia and liver failure.
The alcohol tolerance level is very low in dogs. Alcohol even in small quantities affects the liver and impacts brain function. Accidental alcohol consumption causes in-co-ordination, vomiting, and problems related to the central nervous system.
